Description

Amethyst with Calcite and Hematite, Fengjiashan Mine, Daye Co., Huangshi, Hubei, China, small-cabinet, 6.0 x 5.2 x 5.0 cm, These distinct Amethyst and Calcite combos were from a single early and limited find at the Fengjiashan Mine in China (shortly after it opened in the early 2000s) and rarely surface these days. You see them in the books, but you never seen one for sale anymore! It's a nicely balanced specimen consisting of a stout, dark Amethyst crystal point that is jacketed with small, scalenohedral (dog tooth) Calcite crystals. The Amethyst crystal is translucent to transparent with a glassy luster and a rich purple color, especially near the tip. All of the Calcite crystals are right at, or just under, a centimeter in length and are tightly clustered around the front half of the Amethyst crystal around its prism faces and, as a bonus, they are all sprinkled with a hint of red hematite staining. There is calcite on the bottom of the piece as well and shows where it was easily plucked from the pocket. It's a gorgeous and well composed piece with great contrast and aesthetics! No damage, the color contrast and great luster make this piece stand out. From the noted Chinese mineral collection of Dr. Steve Smale, who has focused on China since the 1990s. This is certainly, for color and quality, balance and condition, one of the absolute best in size class from this unique find of nearly 20 years ago.
