Description

A modern reproduction of what is undoubtedly one of the most enduring and poignant images of the French Queen Marie Antoinette, Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun's 1783 rendering of the tragic figure has the glamour and allure that characterized both her life and her demise. Familiar to many by the enigmatic rose that the young Marie Antoinette holds aloft, the original has since disappeared. Yet this immensely flattering portrait exists through contemporary copies, revealing a very intimate depicting of a sovereign brimming with dignity and sensuality. Adorned in a grey silk dress, the Queen shuns the robes of state for an outfit that would have not only reflected contemporary fashion but also dictated it for years to come. In Vigée Le Brun's portrait the Queen is presented alone, probably in the gardens of Trianon and the Hameau, where she enjoyed leading the rural life, away from the intrigues of the court. A number of variations of this portrait have survived the turbulent centuries. One is housed in the National Museum of the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon, another at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and another can be found in the collection Prince Ludwig von Hessen in Wolfsgarten Castle in Germany. When first unveiled to an eager public Vigée Le Brun's reproduction of the likeness of Marie Antoinette received mixed reviews. Indeed, many writers and visitors were shocked to see the Queen in such simple attire, an image that did not correspond to the usual representation of French royalty. In courtly circles, however, the painting was a great success, accounting for the numerous replicas and copies that survive to this day. Image-conscious, decadent, and vain, this image still casts a remarkable spell over many who yearn for the marvellous luxury of Marie Antoinette's inner circle.
