There's something about the smell and sound of rain that transports me back to my travels in southern Thailand. I was backpacking through the region during the monsoon season, when the heat and humidity were suffocating. But every so often, a massive downpour would come and cool everything off. One particularly memorable rainstorm occurred while I was on a boat trip to Langkawi, a tropical island off the coast. We had a beach hut just 20 meters from the main road, and as the rain pounded the scorching tarmac, steam rose up from the ground.
