This stunning brooch is a beautifully rendered homage to the ancient jewel Bees of Malia which hails from the Minoan civilization circa 1800 BC and is held at the Heraklion Museum of Archaeology in Greece. In this ancient culture the bee was a sacred insect connecting the natural world to the underworld. So, it isn't surprising that the original pendant was unearthed at the necropolis of the Minoan Palace of Malia on the island of Crete. The original Minoan jewel is a pendant with no enamel work or set gems. Here the artist has made a stunning copy of the original with a deliberate intention that it should be seen as an homage too and not an ancient original. Unlike the original the artisan here set gorgeous natural untreated earth mined round cut pink sapphires as the bee's eyes. They also chose to decorate the drops falling below this piece with hand enamel work. This exquisite jewel really makes me smile- it's uplifting and so inspiring. To me the bees look as though they are engaged in kiss and between them perhaps they could be holding the whole world or are they just suspended over honeycomb or a flower? On the reverse this ancient inspired pin secures with a safety clasp. It is signed with a makers mark and marked 750 for 18 Karat yellow gold, this confirmed by testing. The pin measures 2 3/8 wide by 1 1/2 tall (61mm x 38mm). It weighs 12 grams. This gorgeous piece is in lovely condition and is ready to gift or to wear. I love the symbolism of this piece and the artistic rendering of this homage to the original which is beautifully executed. The photos do not do justice to the lovely movement the pin has- each of the enamel drops below the brooch shimmy underneath the all important depiction of the bees. From close examination this brooch would have been made in the second half of the 20th century from the 1950s to the 1980s. Of course two small gold loops could readily be added on the reverse of this piece so the brooch could also be worn as a pendant. An appraisal is included with your purchase of this pretty pin. It shall be sent in a presentation box for safe keeping. The photos form part of the description. Like all colored stones there is a color variation that occurs in different lighting conditions both inside but also outside, even the time of day can make the color of a stone appear a little different. We do our best to show colors as we see them. Color perception is highly individual and some people can perceive more colors than others, also colors can appear somewhat different on different screens and devices due to variations in screen hardware and device display settings.
