In 2020, NASA will launch a mission to land a new rover on Mars. There, the rover will explore the planet for signs of life and test cutting-edge technologies that may one day allow humans to explore the fourth planet of our solar system in person. The rover's revolutionary robotic arm and zoom camera are being developed by Motiv Space Systems, and while the designs were finalized in CAD, they were first conceptualized in drawings made using Palomino Blackwing pencils. Inspired by the colors and textures of the fourth planet, the Blackwing 4 is a tribute to this mission and all the other great technological achievements in history that started with someone putting pencil to paper. It features a rust-colored lacquer with a sand-textured finish, a dune bronze ferrule, and a cream-colored eraser. Its soft lead core (similar to that of the classic Blackwing) is ideal for illustrators and writers who prefer a soft, dark line. Like all Palomino Blackwings, these pencils are crafted from responsibly sourced incense cedar wood and feature a distinctive rectangular eraser that can be extended and replaced as it is worn down with use.
