This is a professional grade rock tumbling /polishing kit for a single use 3 pound tumbler. This kit will polish up to three pounds of rock to a mirror finish. This Kit works best for quartz, jasper, agates, Apache tears and similar "soft" stones. **This Kit Will Polish** **3lbs. Of Stones** **To A Mirror Like Finish** Don't Be Fooled By Others Grits On The Market That Offer Larger Quantities of Grit, This Is The Correct Amount Needed For High Quality Grit, If You Purchase Lower Quality Grit, You Will Need To Purchase Up To 4 Oz. Of Each Type Of Grit. ALSO, some sellers claim that only silicon carbide is to be used during the third stage, claiming that it is Harder, and does not brake down. The point of the third stage 500F tumbling is not to grind, but rather to smooth. Aluminum Oxide is a slightly softer material (Mohs hardness scale, 9, silicone carbide 9-10) that will actually polish the stones better as it breaks down. Using silicon carbide will increase the time required to achieve rocks that are ready for the final polish step since it is causing deeper scratches that will need to be tumbled out as the silicone carbide breaks down. Using Aluminum Oxide will smooth the stones faster, reducing tumbling time. Silicone Carbide does cost more than Aluminum Oxide, but less than $.05 for 3oz. Some other sellers bill this as a premium product, and justify charging an high markup fee. You can pay more so you can tumble longer, or pay less and see results sooner.
