An original 1857 gold Liberty Dollar (type 3) designed by James B Longacre and minted in Philadelphia. Gold dollars were produced between 1849 and 1889, and had three types over their lifetime. A gold dollar coin had, apparently, been proposed several times in the early 19th Century, but it wasn't until the California gold rush, and its resulting supply of bullion. This one depicts the head of Liberty as a Native American princess, with elaborate feather head dress and long, flowing hair. The reverse states 1 Dollar 1857, with a wreath comprising grape bunches, corn, vine leaves, maize, and other food crops Given the condition, it appears to be an uncirculated coin to which, at some point in its life, an owner has added pin. Although the 1857 dollar saw a reasonably high mintage (774,789 coins), there are only an estimated 1400 surviving examples, and very few in good condition.
