Alphonse Mucha 1860-1939
Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech painter and decorative artist, best known for his distinctive Art Nouveau style. Mucha became a chorister at the Saint-Peter’s Cathedral in Brno, where he received his secondary school education. It is there that he had his first revelation, in front of the richness of Baroque art. He later moved to Paris and continued his studies in art and worked producing magazine art and illustrations. It was then that he produced a lithograph for famous Paris actress Sarah Bernhardt who liked the poster so much she signed him to a 6 year contract. Mucha's art quickly became popular and he produced a flurry of paintings, posters and advertisements in what was initially called Mucha Style but later became know as Art Nouveau.

Mucha enjoyed a successful career until the rise of fascism in the late 30's when his work became viewed by some as reactionary. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1939 and became ill during his interrogation. He was released but later died of a lung infection in Prague on 14 July 1939.

Utagawa Hiroshige 1797-1858
Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. The Suijin Shrine print was done in woodblock and captures the shrine at the lower right, the Sumida, Edo's most important river and a blossoming cherry tree. This print was part of his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.

Katsushika Hokusai
The Great Wave Katsushika Hokusai - October 31, 1760 (exact date questionable) May 10, 1849 was born to an artisan family in Edo, now known as Tokyo, Japan. He started painting at the age of 6, became an apprentice to a woodcarver at age 14 and at 18 was accepted into the studio of Katsukawa Shunshō, head of the Katsukawa school. It was here where he mastered the art of Ukiyo-e, a popular style of woodblock printing and started developing his own line of prints. This famous print was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 and was Hokusai's first print in the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. It is Hokusai's most famous work, and one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.

About Klimt The Kiss

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter, whose primary subject was the female body. Born in 1862 he was one of 7 children with 2 of his brothers also becoming artists. Gustav studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts along with his brother Ernst.

While he enjoyed fame as a mural painter, he also was criticized for the radical and symbolic paintings which were to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. That was his last commissioned work. Klimt became a founding member and president of the Vienna Secession which exhibited unconventional art in many forms. He developed his signature style and produced The Kiss in 1907-1908 in what is referred to as his Golden Period. This striking painting is believed to be of both he and his life companion Emilie Louise Flöge who was a clothing designer. This famous work is composed of oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance. The painting is now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna, and is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period.

About Artist Paul Klee Paul Klee was born in 1879. He was a Swiss/German who as a child he was gifted musically playing the violin when he was 8. As a teenager his interest in art developed and at 16 his landscape drawings already showed great promise. In 1928 he began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and earned his degree. He primarily worked in black and white until he became associated with other artists including Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. What evolved was a highly individual style which was influenced by art movements which included Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. He is considered a master of color theory and both he and his colleague, Wassily Kandinsky, taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. He is credited with producing over 9000 works.
