This is a rare Victorian Carpet Layer’s Stretcher Tool dating to around 1850-1870.
To ensure the carpet was tightly stretched to avoid rumples & creases, the teeth were pushed into the weave with the knob against the chest or stomach leaving both hands free to tack the edges.
In this pre-vacuum cleaner era, carpets were frequently lifted to be beaten & cleaned outside & had to be refitted each time. Poorer households would do this themselves, whilst more wealthy home owners would employ professionals with the correct tools!
This piece is very good quality with a cast steel 10 point comb head & beautifully turned ash shaft & button.
About 24” or 61cm long x 3” or 7.5cm across the comb. 450g weight.
In good antique condition with expected wear & marks from use. One ancient crack in the button as shown. Please have a good look at all the photos.
A rare, museum quality tool. Still usable but would be ideal for carpet showroom or Retro store displays, Victorian trades & living history exhibitions.
Shipping is Tracked/Insured only. Please refer to the listed rates).
